The Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology started functioning as an independent department of Government Dental College, Calicut in 1982. The department became fully fledged by the year 2005 with the sanctioning of the Post Graduate course. Annual admission of postgraduate students in the Department is limited to two per year.

In the Department, we have four teaching faculty supported by a Dental hygienist, three Radiographers and a Full time sweeper.

The Oral Medicine and Radiology department consisting of three clinics:
• Outpatient clinic / Undergraduate clinic
An average OP turnover is 150-200 patients. All necessary Covid precautions and protocols are being followed in the clinic. This clinic is managed by Interns and Postgraduates under the guidance of teaching staff. This also functions as the undergraduate clinic. From here the patient are screened, diagnosed and referred to the concerned departments for further treatment. Patients requiring detailed examination and biopsies are dealt within the Postgraduate clinic.
• Postgraduate clinic
- Oral mucosal lesions, cysts and tumors, carcinomas medically compromised patients for dental fitness are referred to the Oral Medicine Postgraduate clinic for further detailed examination, investigation and management.
- Department also deals with age estimation by radiographic assessment.
- We maintain a record of cases reporting to the Postgraduate clinic so that each case can be promptly followed up.
- There is a soft tissue diode laser in the clinic for the management of various oral mucosal lesions.

• The Radiology clinic
On the ground floor is the Radiology clinic with a reception. There are two Intra oral periapical X-ray machines, one Elipsopantomographic machine, an intraoral digital radiography and one general X-ray unit in the department. Department of OMR has recently acquired a CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) machine for Imaging of Maxillofacial region in the various planes (axial/coronal and sagittal) i.e. multi-planar imaging with 3-D reconstruction. Additionally imaging (CT scan) of Maxillofacial region using this equipment is done with less radiation exposure (only one tenth (1/10) of the exposure) compared to conventional CT scan. These are managed by the radiographers and postgraduates under the supervision of the teaching staff. The radiology clinic is so designed to hold good the norms of ICRP regulations. An average of 100 periapical X-rays and 20 extra oral radiographs are taken per day.
