Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a surgical specialty focusing on reconstructive surgery of the face, facial trauma surgery, the oral cavity, head and neck, mouth, and jaws, as well as facial cosmetic surgery. From its humble beginnings, this specialty has, over the last 150 years, advanced immensely in its scope, expertise and technical proficiency to establish itself as a true surgical specialty of orofacial region, being the bridge between the medical and dental specialities. The Post-graduate program MDS Oral and Maxillofacial surgery started in 1992 and the recognition of the PG courses was given in 1994. A wide range of surgical procedures and non surgical procedures are regularly performed by the department and an excellent trauma care set up with 24 hour duty is also functioning in the department for past three decades. The OMFS department is also an approved PhD centre of the Kerala University of Health Sciences since 2020. The department also regularly conducts various medical education programs in the form of symposiums, lectures, hands-on courses and webinars.

• Major cases under General Anesthesia are performed by an expert team of faculty members in the Major Operation Theatre and Casualty Emergency Operation Theatre

The first Professor & Head of the Department, Late Dr. N. S. Rajeevan was instrumental in bringing the post-graduate programme to GDC, Kozhikode. He was DCI member and PG & UG Board member of various universities of India. He has also got numerous publications in National & International Journals.
Dr Varghese Mani, Professor & Head of the Department was the president of Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of India (AOMSI). He was also state AOMSI president and also have few text books in Oral Surgery to his credit. He has also conducted many National and State hands-on workshops.
Dr Geetha is also former Professor & Head of Department and is a member of UG & PG board of many universities of Kerala. She is also having many publications in National & International journals.
Dr Thomas Joseph, Professor & Head of Oral surgery was also the Vice-Priincipal of Govt. Dental College, Kozhikode. He was the state president of AOMSI. He was member of PG & UG boards of various universities of South India and he is also having numerous publications in National & International journals.
Dr Soumithran C S, former Professor & Head of Oral Surgery is now the Principal of Govt. Dental College, Kozhikode. He was the Dean of Calicut University, PG & UG board member of various universities of Kerala. He has numerous publications to his credit and has conducted numerous CDEs and workshops. He is also a regular keynote speaker in various National & International Conferences.
